Chapter News

The LA/LB Chapter had a great February. We were honored to host RADM Helis and Jim Tobin '77 for two days as part of a West Coast tour. As usual, members of the chapter stepped up in a big way to put hands and feet to our Acta Non Verba motto. The Admiral was able to visit the merchant marine memorial and the maritime museum in San Pedro. John Pitts and Mary Francis Trivelli, great friends to the academy, honored us by leading a personal tour. Captain Jennifer Williams '90, Deputy Sector Commander of Coast Guard Sector LA/LB, provided a briefing of the great work being done by Kings Pointers and everyone in her command. Following the briefing, Capt. Williams took the admiral out for a tour of the Long Beach harbor in one of their patrol boats. Captain James Jenkins, Sector Commander of Coast Guard Sector LA/LB, Jim Tobin '77, LT(jg) Ben Lyons '09, along with LT John Downing '02 and LT Peter Bizzaro '07 from Coast Guard Sector San Diego, joined us for the amazing ride.

Joe Walsh '83, of Keesal, Young and Logan in LB, graciously opened up their banquet hall for us. It was an amazing venue and everyone enjoyed both the food and camaraderie! The chapter, including parents of current midshipmen, was able to meet and speak with the admiral. Following the dinner, we were able to hear from Jim Tobin '77 and RADM Helis regarding both the present state of affairs of the academy and the progression of plans for the academy's future. RADM Helis was also kind enough to field some questions posed by the chapter. David Arsenault '86 provided the admiral with an impressive briefing and tour of California United Terminal container (CUT). Jim Dillman '86 provided an excellent briefing of MetroPorts bulk material handling operations at their corporate headquarters.

The chapter was privileged to have the admiral attend a lunch honoring all of our alumni who sailed during the '40s. It was great to see so many come out; it was even better that we had the admiral there to convey a heartfelt thanks and well done from all of us who are beneficiaries of their legacy and sacrifice. – Matt Hartzell '94

CA – San Diego The San Diego Chapter hosted RADM Helis on Friday, February 15, 2013 during his West Coast visit. The Superintendent was briefed by Fred Harris, NASSCO President, on the state of shipbuilding and the future of the industry in the US. Peter Garofalo '05 conducted a shipyard tour, on a beautiful 80-degree February day. This was followed by a tour aboard USNS Montford Point (MLP 1) led by the director of ships management Treavor Callum KP '89 where the admiral was greeted by a contingent of Kings Pointers employed at NASSCO shipyard.

Our superintendent then met for a luncheon with leaders of the port of San Diego, namely Aimee Heim '98 and Stan Westover '68. Ron Popham, Assistant VP, Industry & Trade Relations Port of San Diego, then guided a tour of Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal and the National City Marine Terminal operated by Pasha Automotive.

The San Diego Chapter was hosted for dinner by Tom Baumann '04 at his family restaurant, Bali Hai. We had a record turnout for the Superintendent, who had time to discuss the state of the academy and answer our questions. The admiral was then swept off to the airport to return home that night on the redeye to snow glistened JFK airport.

May 17 is our next golf outing; check-in 12 p.m., shot gun start at 1 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. Reservations and $80 payment are due by May 3, 2013. For more information, please email Stan Westover at

The San Francisco Chapter hosted a meeting with Maritime Administrator David Matsuda on October 11, 2012 at the Marine's Memorial Club and Hotel in San Francisco. There were 10 San Francisco Chapter members in attendance. The meeting was requested by Mr. Matsuda on an informal basis to obtain input about the Academy from the local alumni chapter. Alumni attended the meeting from various classes, with good discussions amongst the attendees and Mr. Matsuda. We all thank both Mr. Matsuda and Eric Lindberg '94 (Chapter President) for arranging this meeting.

CA – San Francisco The San Francisco Chapter has had a great start for 2013. Meetings are now planned for both sides of the Bay in an effort to make the meeting locations more accessible to the members working in the East Bay area. Meetings are planned to alternate between the SS Jeremiah O'Brien (San Francisco) and the SS Red Oak Victory in Richmond, CA.

An excellent alumni meeting was held on the historic Liberty ship SS Red Oak Victory in Richmond, CA on January 8, 2013. A total of 12 Kings Point alumni and 1 Cal Maritime alumni guest were in attendance. The major announcement from the meeting was that one of our members, Capt. Pat Maloney '74, has been appointed as executive director of the Jeremiah O'Brien National Liberty Ship Memorial. Congratulations to Capt. Maloney in anticipation of a job well done!

Also discussed was the upcoming visit from Admiral Helis to the San Francisco Bay area on February 12, 2013. Admiral Helis will attend the monthly alumni meeting on the Jeremiah O'Brien and address the local alumni chapter. Admiral Helis will also meet with a smaller group of alumni at the Marine Memorial Hotel on the evening of February 12, 2013 to discuss local concerns and ideas for the future of the Academy.

Bob Featherer '68 discussed the upcoming fall Blue and Gray Golf tournament. This year the tournament will not coincide with Fleet Week and the traditional Blue Angels flyover during your backswing. Due to scheduling conflicts with the rescheduling of the New Orleans Workboat show, the San Francisco Blue and Gray tournament will be moved to September 16, 2013.

Admiral Helis and Alumni Association and Foundation President Jim Tobin '77 visited with the San Francisco chapter on February 12, 2013. Admiral Helis addressed the group at a luncheon meeting aboard the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, and later met with a smaller group of alumni for a social hour and dinner at the Marine Memorial Hotel in San Francisco. We truly appreciate the opportunity to meet with both Admiral Helis and Jim Tobin '77 to discuss concerns and share ideas for the continuing betterment of Kings Point. – Herb Forthuber '77

DC – KP Club of Washington, DC

On December 23, 2012, the Kings Point Club of Washington, DC (KPWDC) enjoyed a festive Holiday Brunch at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA. Alumni, parents, and midshipmen enjoyed our speaker Rear Admiral Mark Buzby '79, Commander, Military Sealift Command. The event ended with Captain Robert M. Marshall '51 presenting Admiral Buzby with the 2012 Acta Non Verba Award (Robert M. Marshall Award) – In grateful appreciation of those individuals who have shown tireless and unselfish efforts to the Kings Point Club of Washington.

On January 20, 2013, the KPWDC hosted 200 midshipmen and more then 100 alumni, parents, and friends of the USMMA at the USNA Alumni Hall for a 2013 Presidential Inaugural Reception. David Matsuda, Maritime Administrator, expressed to the midshipmen the pride all in the room shared in their continued service (witnessed after Sandy) and in representing us all in the inaugural parade. The Administrator was joined by Paul "Chip" Jaenichen, the new Deputy Maritime Administrator, and John Hussey, Special Assistant to Maritime Administrator.

During the event, Rear Admiral Mark Buzby '79 lead the room in an inspirational rendition of Heave Ho. With the help of Robert Marshall '51, Robert Butterworth '67, Roy Rogers '71, Steve Blust '71, Eileen Roberson '80, Owen Doherty '81, Erin Gant '83, Justin Harts '98, Melissa Mejias '08 and many other alumni, parents and friends, we surely rocked the halls of the USNA. The evening ended with Midshipman Daniel Galginaitis '13, Regimental Commander, leading the room in our Alma Mater. A great evening!

The KPWDC alumni had the distinct honor and pleasure to have Deputy Maritime Administrator CAPT Paul "Chip" N. Jaenichen, Sr. address us at our February luncheon. In attendance were five Alumni Association and Foundation Directors: Thomas W. Harrelson '66, Gary Gilbert '71, Eric Mensing '81, Eileen D. Roberson '80, and Robert Smith '92; as well as, Albert J. Herberger '55, Vice Admiral USN retired and former Maritime Administrator, Steven R. Blust '71, former Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, and Captain Lee A. Kincaid '77, President of the American Maritime Congress. Chip provided us with a comprehensive overview of how important the Administration, Department of Transportation and MARAD views Kings Point and the Maritime Industry to our Nation's Security. To that end, he shared the ongoing capital improvements being accomplished and planned for the Academy, including a slide presentation of progress to date. Thanks to Dave Gardy '80, CEO of TV Worldwide the event was memorialized – the video can be viewed at – Dan Turissini '81

FL – Jacksonville

On February 28, 2013, the chapter alongside the Alumni Association and Foundation (AAF) held a banquet to honor the Crowley Corporation and Mr. Thomas B. Crowley, Jr. at the University Club in downtown Jacksonville, FL. Jack Smith, President of the Jacksonville Chapter and Scott O'Connor, AAF Board, hosted the event (see page 33 for more details).

On Friday, March 1, 2013 the MARAD Executive Director, Mr. Joel Szabat toured the T/V Kings Pointer as she lay alongside the North Florida Shipyard facility in downtown Jacksonville. Mr. Szabat was given an inside and outside tour of the vessel and observed the progress of shipyard work being done to upgrade the vessel's systems to CFR and USCG standards for certification as a training vessel. Gene Alley and Joe Cotter took the time to showcase the vessel's bridge and its electronic dynamic positioning (station keeping) control systems, fire control systems and navigation equipment. Upgrade work in the Galley and the staterooms for cadets, as well as that in the engineering spaces was also shown. Work is expected to continue through the spring. Gene and Joe also conducted a walking tour of the North Florida yard, in particular the 600-ton traveling lift that the yard acquired recently with DOT grant money. After departing the Kings Pointer by pilot boat, the group motored down river observing the various terminal facilities in the Port of Jacksonville, including the Crowley Maritime ones. Capt. Kavanaugh '98 and Capt. O'Connor '83 were able to impart their local knowledge and give Mr. Szabat insight to several of Jaxport's facility upgrades and navigation projects currently in progress. – Scott O'Connor '83

GA – North Georgia

On December 15, 2012 the chapter was represented at two Wreaths Across America ceremonies in North Georgia. John Palmer '84 placed the Merchant Marine wreath during the event at the National Cemetery in Marietta and Bill Holyoak '59 placed the Merchant Marine Wreath during ceremonies at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. Of the over 18,000 buried in the Marietta National Cemetery at Marietta, GA, there are representatives from every major campaign from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan, included among them are Merchant Mariners under USNR status. The goal of the organizers of the Marietta ceremony is to one day be able to place a wreath at all 18,750+ graves sites on the property. During the ceremonies at the Canton cemetery, wreaths were laid on all 4,400 gravesites. – Bruce Howie '65

GA – Savannah

The Savannah Chapter held its third annual Oyster Roast on March 1, 2013 at Jennifer and Craig Maggioni's house on Wilmington Island. The Chapter hosted Jim Tobin '77 on his southern campaign and Pete Racket '61, visiting from the SACC held here in Savannah. The weather could not have been better and the stories flowed. Craig Maggioni '06 brought out his pocket canon, but alas, Murphy reared his ugly head and yielded a fouled canon. Good thing the Superintendent didn't show, because Craig and Casey Dexter '04 would have been standing mast at 0800 Saturday morning. We are looking forward to next year's event, but periodically get together for drinks, dinner, or lunch. If you are in the area, please shoot me a message. – Jason Ball '98

IL – Chicago

Greetings from the Chicago Chapter. Last year was a busy one, taking several trips on the training vessel Manatra for our members, and reaching out to our local group with current events and calls. We ended 2012 with a wonderful All Academy Ball in Naperville, hosted by the local KP parents group, with a spirited speech by Chris Rentner '05. In order to help the KP Alumni effort in general, we have local activities to support or join:

Support recruiting and awareness: Jules Traut '61 and local parents organizations continue to support this effort. Additional involvement is requested from the local membership for college fairs and selection committees.

Network in area business: Come to one of the monthly gatherings and network, regardless of the current industry you are in. Drop me a line, or give me information to pass on to our local members. Job tips and placement help is always appreciated, and when we look through local channels in our membership, it helps our mission.

Come visit the Manatra: Several active alums are also volunteers in the T/V Manatra, a former Annapolis YP now used for the Sea Cadet Program. Mike Vogt '92 is currently updating the website (visit it at Warren Marwedel '66 is president of the non-profit organization, and continues to be indispensable with his guidance. Please visit the website for more information.

If you are in the Chicagoland area, please email to receive emails and update your information with the AAF. We hold irregular gatherings, typically meeting on the third Tuesday of the month, at 6 p.m., at Boston Blackies in downtown Chicago. If you would be interested in attending, please let me know. OR – Portland

On December 14, 2012, the chapter held a West Coast Christmas Party at Joe's Crab Shack in Vancouver, WA with lots of seafood instead of turkey. It was a memorable event with a Christmas present exchange, mystery Santa surprises, raffle items including a classic, iconic and nautical "Cutty Shark" model contributed by Paul McLinn '93. Tom Councell '51, happy big prizewinner of the $50 coupon from went home to Wilsonville, OR with smiles and his wife's plans for a dinner out. Paul and wife, Monica, and daughters Alejandra and Eva led the Christmas Carols with appropriate maestro gestures and volume and John Torjusten '79, Columbia River Pilot, "played fiddle" and survived our audible indulgences while Wayne Torjusten '74 sang bass. It was an event that will be recalled in Christmases of the future, especially due to Captain Steve Ford '70 on "Five Golden Rings." Back to work at the January 19 meeting.

On January 19, 2013, Ron Bernhart '75 and wife Sharen made a warm entrance and, during dinner, extended their hospitality to invite the KP Club summer picnic to their lakeside resort. After discussing chapter attendance concerns and future admin decisions, in recognition of his devout monthly KP Chapter meeting attendance, Paul McLinn '93 was awarded a beautiful container of vintage 30-year-old Rhum. Ernie Zumbrunnen '47 received a to/ from shipmate lift from Paul McLinn '93. From the raffle, Ernie took home a $25 dinner voucher for the Amadeus restaurant in Portland. Three other lucky raffle winners Paul McLinn '93, Ron Bernhart '75, and Howard Foreman '79 received vouchers for a two-night/three-day vacation getaway (Retail: $120). WA – Puget Sound

The Puget Sound Chapter didn't let a wet winter keep us from staying busy. Events included Wreaths Across America, the Holiday cruise on the historic S/S Virginia V, the All Service Academy Ball, our monthly 3rd Monday Team Movement socials, and finally our enormously successful dinner with guest speakers USMMA Superintendent Jim Helis and USMMA-AAF President Jim Tobin '77.

The Holiday Cruise on the S/S Virginia V took us underway from her mooring at the Historic Ships Pier on South Lake Union, across the Lake, to then standby at the entrance to the Portage Bay Reach. A delicious buffet dinner was served on board. From our station at the entrance to the Reach, we had the perfect vantage point to watch the grand finale Holiday Parade of Ships. Dozens of vessels sailed by, all festively decorated in Holiday lights. We left the Reach and joined all of the ships off of Gas Works Park, where we listened to live Christmas Carols being sung across the water. It was a perfect evening underway!

The All Service Academy Ball followed at the end of December at the Marriott Hotel on the Seattle waterfront. Hosted once again by the Naval Academy Parents Club, it was a wonderful formal affair. This year M/N Sean Higgins '15 represented Kings Point. M/N Higgins' parents Captain Kyle Higgins '96 and wife Dona were in attendance as well as Diane Wood (Adam Wood '14) and Connie Buhl '81.

WA – Puget Sound

On February 11, over 100 Kings Pointers, family, and friends gathered at the Harbor Club to welcome the new Academy Superintendent, RADM Jim Helis, USMS and AAF President Jim Tobin '77. The two spent the day before the dinner meeting with several maritime industry companies in the Seattle area, with the goal of introducing the Superintendent to leaders in the local maritime industry, gain an education about those industries, and learn how Kings Point plays a role to those industries. The day began with breakfast at the Salmon Bay Cafe in Ballard (a working waterfront favorite). Rick Brown '80 then hosted us at Trident Seafoods where we met with Rick (Engineering Manager) and other senior management to learn about the fishing industry and discuss opportunities for Kings Pointers both as interns and cadets and then as mates and engineers. We followed that with a visit to Elliott Bay Design Group where Brian King '81 (VP of Engineering and principal) showed us the sophisticated methods EBDG uses to design vessels. Jon Kjaerulff '83 (owner, Fremont Maritime) hosted us on a tour of his company's facilities where they offer all types of safety courses and training.

Vigor Industrial's Dave Whitcomb '95 (COO) and Chris Morgan '95 (VP of Vigor's US Fab division) gave a terrific tour of Vigor's Harbor Island shipyard, including a hardhat tour of one of the new Washington State ferries under construction. It was great to be able to see firsthand what a ship looks like when she is still being outfitted. Our final stop was with Steve Scalzo '70, COO of Foss Marine Holdings, and John Parrott '86, President of Totem Ocean Trailer Express. Steve and John were able to present an excellent overview of the inland industry and blue water industry respectively, including their ideas of how Kings Point can enhance its curriculum and training to match what is happening in industry.

Following that very full day, Superintendent Helis and Jim Tobin attended the dinner at the Harbor Club. The Superintendent presented an update of what is happening at the Academy while Jim Tobin updated everyone with the great news occurring with the Alumni Association and Foundation. Superintendent Helis was presented with a plaque from the Chapter and Jim Tobin was presented with a NW Seafood basket. We are very appreciative that both of these gentlemen who are so important to the success of Kings Point were able to come to the Northwest to speak with us.

The Chapter continues to have a monthly drop-in social, our "3rd Monday Team Movement," at McCormick & Schmicks Harborside on Lake Union every 3rd Monday at 5:30 p.m. Please join us at these and other events.

2013 dues ($25/year) are due. Please send a check made out to "USMMAAA-PSC" to Treasurer Jim van der Veen, 5955 145th Ave SE, Bellevue, WA 98006. For information about the chapter, please contact Chapter President Connie Buhl '81 at or call 206- 605-4685. – Connie Buhl '81
