YOUR MEMBERSHIP Periodontal program directors set the stage for success In 2015, 36 periodontal residency programs achieved 100 percent student membership in the AAP. By encouraging their residents to join the AAP, the directors of these periodontal programs are not only providing the clinical training required for a successful career, but also helping their students prepare for their careers after graduation. “It is important for our residents to be involved in the AAP,” explains Dr. Praveen Gajendrareddy, director of the Postgraduate Program in Periodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. “Through their membership, students have the opportunity to represent their programs in the periodontal community while expanding their leadership and personal development skills. Membership helps them become familiar with the Academy’s objectives and accomplishments, and is also an excellent resource for literature, forums, and meetings. The AAP also offers a platform for young professionals to voice their opinions.” AAP Student members receive many of the same benefits as Active members at a fraction of the cost. Student membership offers the full networking, mentoring, and resource support enjoyed by those whose careers are more established. Congratulations to the directors of these residency programs for encouraging their students to take advantage of all that the AAP has to offer.
