AAP And Wiley Enter Partnership To Publish Jop And Cap

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recently signed an agreement with commercial publisher Wiley Periodicals, Inc. to publish the Journal of Periodontology (JOP) and Clinical Advances in Periodontics (CAP). This is the first time the AAP has partnered with a publishing company to publish its peerreviewed journals. The new partnership represents the culmination of a two-year strategic evaluation of the Academy’s scientific publishing business.

Under the agreement, which runs from 2018 through 2024, the AAP will retain ownership of JOP and CAP along with control over all key decisions including advertising, peer review, editor selection, and editorial direction. AAP staff will interact daily with Wiley, overseeing operations, liaising between the Academy and Wiley, and managing peer-reviewed output from the AAP’s science activities. As a publisher, Wiley will be responsible for printing, distributing, selling, and licensing the journals. Most of these activities will be managed at Wiley’s corporate headquarters in Hoboken, N.J. and office in Medford, Mass.

In addition to a significant signing bonus, the Academy will receive a 50 percent royalty of all revenues earned annually from subscriptions, advertising, licensing, permissions, etc. Wiley will also provide the AAP with an annual editorial stipend and funds for an annual strategy day to discuss the future direction of JOP and CAP.

The Academy initiated a comprehensive assessment of its scientific publishing enterprise in 2015. The first phase included market research, conducted in late 2015 through early 2016. The second phase involved the development of a request for proposal (RFP), distributed to five commercial publishers in summer 2016. A scholarly publishing consultant was retained to help manage the RFP and evaluation process, and the Board of Trustees appointed a task force to evaluate the proposals received, make a recommendation on whether the AAP should partner with a commercial publisher, and if so, identify a potential partner.

The Task Force to Evaluate Commercial Publishing Partners began its work in September 2016. After reviewing initial proposals, the Task Force determined it would be in the Academy’s best interests to partner with a publisher beginning in 2018, due to the rapidly changing marketplace in scholarly publishing and the services and financial incentives a publisher could provide. The Task Force invited three publishers to present their proposals in November 2016 in Chicago. Following lengthy deliberation, two publishers were asked to revise their proposals. The strengths and weaknesses of each proposal were outlined for the Board in February 2017, and the Board selected Wiley as the AAP’s preferred publishing partner. Contract negotiations commenced immediately, and both parties signed the agreement in June 2017. Transitioning of workflows, vendors, and production processes has begun, with Wiley set to publish its first JOP issue in January 2018 and first printed CAP issue in March 2018.

AAP members serving on the Task Force are: Dr. Paul Rosen, chair; Drs. Stephen Bass, Jonathan Do, Bryan Frantz, Kenneth Kornman, Nancy Newhouse, Michael Reddy; and Dr. Terrence Griffin, AAP president and Board liaison.

With Wiley, JOP and CAP are joining an exceptionally strong dental portfolio, which includes Clinical Oral Implants Research, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, and Periodontology 2000. The Academy will be Wiley’s largest U.S. society partnership in periodontology and dentistry and will be the flagship of their portfolio within these disciplines. As a result, significant marketing and production resources will be devoted to JOP and CAP to further elevate their status and extend their reach into institutions internationally. AAP will also benefit from Wiley’s technological innovations, international sales representation, and expertise in editorial strategy development. In early 2018, JOP Online will be upgraded to a state-of-the-art platform featuring a contemporary look, responsive design, and user-friendly features.

Finally, Wiley will provide a dependable revenue stream to the AAP. The new partnership will positively impact the bottom line of the Academy’s publishing business, allowing the AAP to expand its products and services for members and enhance existing programs as well.
