LOCAL HEROES E VERY AUTUMN WE ASK YOU, EDIBLE VANCOUVER’S readers, to vote for the individuals and organizations that are champions of our local food system, and this year you responded in record numbers. Here are the results. BEST RETAILER Kudos to Catherine and Trevor Yamamoto of Wheelhouse Sea-foods and Specialty Meats , a small shop with big heart in East Vancouver. Given the store’s modest size and single location, we were astonished to see the number of votes for this business. Clearly their customers have a lot of love for the shop that sells sustainably caught seafood, locally raised meats, and The Farm House Cheeses . Make sure you visit during spot prawn season. And in the summer, try a bit of what could be the world’s best squid salad. 2605 East Hastings Street, Vancouver. 604-215-5562 We would also like to acknowledge an honourable mention for this category. Whole Foods Market received almost as many votes as Wheelhouse. Although not a locally owned business, our hats go off to Whole Foods for the range of BC products they carry, and to their Northwest Local Forager Denise Breyley, who is tireless in her quest for quality products from our neck of the woods. BEST CHEF/RESTAURANT Photos: Mary Forstbauer, Carole Topalian. Others, Philip Solman BEST FARM/FARMER With true pleasure we give this award to Mary Forstbauer of Forst-bauer Farm . The farm, which produces a variety of mixed crops in Chilliwack, is certified organic and Demeter certified for bio-dynamic practices, and Mary herself is president of the Certified Organic Associations of BC. You’ll find the farm’s biodynamic blue-berries, strawberries, beef, eggs, and range of vegetables at many farmers’ markets throughout the Lower Mainland. forstbauer.com Chef Adrian Beaty of Seasonal 56 has a strong commitment to sup-porting local farmers, and consider-able talent for transforming their ingredients into comfort cuisine with elegant flourishes. The restaurant’s list of local producers is extensive, and includes Six Masters’ Farm , Anita’s Organic Mill , Goat’s Pride Dairy , Ethical Bean Coffee , and Glorious Organics Co-op . We applaud their Designated Driver Program for groups of four or more—the member of your group who drinks no alcohol that evening receives a complimentary entrée and non-alcoholic beverage. #201-26730 56th Avenue, Langley, 604-625-5601. seasonal56.ca By the way, we share the sentiment behind the vote for “All those who cook fresh for their family and friends.” If this describes you, give yourself a pat on the back.
