edible Marin and Wine Country Summer 2011 : Page 2

GRIST FOR THE MILL PUBLISHER AND EDITOR IN CHIEF Gibson Thomas As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. It is hard for me to believe that this is the second anniversary issue of Edible Marin & Wine Country . While I can’t say that every moment of putting the magazine together could be called “fun”—I did see 3am while sitting at my desk twice this week—I can say that each and every moment has been a labor of love and an absolute joy. It is a gift to be able to gather and then present to you the stories of our extraor-dinary local farmers, ranchers, cheesemakers, chefs and other food artisans and good-food activists each season. Thank you to our advertisers, without whom we could not publish Edible Marin & Wine Country , and also to our many subscrib-ers, local and across the country, who also support the magazine. And thanks to you, our readers. This past year has brought some exciting new additions to the magazine. We now have an Edible Marin & Wine Country app for the iPad, downloadable for free through iTunes, which means you have access to resources like our Farmers’ Market Directory, Eat Local Guide and the Sonoma Marin Cheese Trail Map in this issue while you are out and about—with live links for directions. I am also hosting a new show on edible RADIO called “The Drink Tank.” Listen to my interviews of artisan wine, beer, spirit and other beverage makers, and other podcasts about food and food policy, at www.edibleradio.com. It is also my proud pleasure to announce that on May 6, 2011, the Edible Communities group of publications that includes Edible Marin & Wine Country received the first-ever Publication of the Year award from the James Beard Foun-dation. To read the text of the award, visit www.ediblemarinandwinecountry. com. I am honored to be a part of this community that is making a real differ-ence in the world. This issue is a celebration of, yes, dirt! Read all about how wonderful “she” is, and why it is high time that we all wake up and start to take care of her—and, in doing so, ourselves. So get out there, get dirty and have a wonderful summer.
