Perusing the Pumpkin Patch Watching a little kid get up close and personal with a giant pumpkin is kind of like watching a little kid encounter a puppy. Th ere’s less face washing involved, but the expression of joyful wonder is similar, and it’s a fun way to show youngsters where their food comes from. Beyond the classic fat Cinder-ella pumpkins, look for long-faced pumpkins with wizened stalks and ghost-coloured pumpkins. But these places are a lot more than simple pumpkin farms; they are agri-tourist attractions with petting zoos, hayrides, and seasonal spookiness. Go early in October, when the weather’s likely to be warmer, and don’t forget to choose pumpkins for carving as well as pumpkins for eating.
